By Patricia Summerfield April 2, 2009 Mackinaw's restaurant is housed in a beautiful hand crafted log building with six stone fireplaces. It is appropriately decorated with a north woods theme; there are authentic various stuffed animal heads and fowl, along with antique lumber cutting tools displayed in different rooms. The center of the restaurant is where the bar & lounge area is located with flat screen TVs and a small stage in a corner for live entertainment. The restaurant is handsomely decorated with an amicably clean and warm atmosphere.
There was a 20 minute wait for dinner and while I was waiting an employee was passing out chocolate chip cookies with tongs from a very large wicker basket to everyone in the front hostess area and also in the bar lounge area. Everyone was in a very festive mood and I also noticed the owner was constantly walking around talking to customers and making sure everything was okay. The wait was only 15 minutes, after which I was brought to my booth and the waitress came to promptly take my order. I ordered the Oriental Chicken Salad for $9.99. My salad was a large portion and consisted of grilled chicken breast, mandarin oranges, shaved almonds, chow mein noodles, water chestnuts, and fat free toasted sesame dressing on mounds of romaine lettuce. It was served with cornbread and cinnamon butter. My salad was fresh and had a nice amount of chicken; the dressing was tasty and did not over saturate the salad. The cornbread was not very impressive - it tasted like a box mix. I decided to splurge and order desert, their brownie sundae for $4.95. It contained three scoops of ice cream with a warm brownie in the center and raspberry and chocolate topping drizzled over everything with whipped cream on top. It was definitely large enough for two or three people, the brownie was moist and the toppings were warm, it was delicious. Throughout the whole evening I was impressed with the stasff's excellent customer service skills, they were all courteous and polite. The bartenders were talkative, very fun, and outgoing. As I was walking through the restaurant a staff member from the kitchen walked out by me but stopped and made sure that I went and walked ahead of him first. Good training with attention to detail is so important and adds so much more enjoyment to the dining experience.
