I have been sent on a mission to find hamburgers that only cost a dollar, eat them and tell you about it. I will do my best to be objective, no one realizes more than myself that you can't expect much for a dollar. I don't expect these hamburgers to compare to some of the super burgers that I have had in my life. But everything has a story, and a $1.00 hamburger could be really interesting if you can bear with me. That said I went to the Goal post for lunch today; it's located just down a short stretch on Manitowoc Rd were the Goal Post or posts are literally right out front of the Bar and Grill.. My objective "The Dollar Burger!" As I walked in I passed the sign on the front of the building confirming that yes the $1.00 Burger was inside. The place was nice and warm which to me was awesome because it is cold outside today. The inside kind of reminds me of the bars that are up north with the wood paneled interior, nice large island bar with bar stools all around, and a section for eating at tables or high tops, I sat right next to the coin opp pool table. They must take their pool seriously here because I noticed a bottle of baby powder on a shelf right next to the table.
The waitress/bartender ask me if I needed a menu, no I said "Just give me two of the dollar hamburgers, fries, and a Pepsi." She replied with "Do you want any fried onions on that?" "Sure just on one of them though," I said. I didn't want to taint my original subject of interest. After all this is about the dollar burger, not the dollar burger with fried onions. I walked over to the old jukebox to check the mix. I picked out "China Grove," "Black Water," and "Touch and Go;" the waitress brought out the ketchup and mustard and my giant Pepsi, it had to be at least 24 oz. I sat down, relaxed to the tunes and observed. This place has a really 80s, northwoods , Green Bay vibe to it. Like nothing has probably changed much in the place over the years except for the TVs, they have some pretty nice big screens in there. I could just feel the Green Bay Packers love floating around in the place.
My burger basket has arrived, the Dollar burger was on a very soft squishy white bun. The burger was a good size if a little on the thin side, it came plain with about 4 pickle slices. It was not greasy, just a little bit on the dry side and I could taste a seasoned salt on the meat. I loaded it up with the pickles and some mustard and down the hatch it went, soon to be followed by the one with onions along with some crinkle cut fries and soda. The burger was not grilled or broiled my guess would be pan fried. It reminded me of the burgers you would cook up tailgating minus the grill flavor. I got the bill and I thought this was going to be a cheap one. Remember I didn't look at the menu. The total was $7.48! Man I would have made it out of there cheap if I would have skipped the soda and got water. The big soda set me back $3.00! So the food was a good value at $4.48 minus tax for 2 one dollar burgers, one with fried onions and a huge load of fries. To make this a little more interesting I went to pay with my plastic and they don't take cards, but they do have an ATM that has a 3 dollar charge. So if I did this a second time around I could make it out of there a winner, but in the end my first dollar burger lunch adventure cost me $9.48 after tip. I really liked the warm small town atmosphere, the burger was OK, I can't complain, the service was nice and the burger only cost me a buck. I guess a place like this has a ton of regulars. I bet their Friday Fish Fry is awesome!
