By Patricia Summerfield October 21, 2009 I went for lunch at Cellar on the Fox, which is located in Historic Downtown De Pere. This restaurant has access off of the front of the restaurant on Broadway Street or behind their building in the back parking lot. It is situated downstairs, hence the name cellar and has no windows in the main dining area but they do offer very bright overhead lighting. Towards one side of the room is a very large bar with older linoleum floors, and the dining area has a type of indoor outdoor carpeting. The walls looked freshly painted in a white color, with the original booths. The tables had white linen table cloths which were decorated with mini pumpkins. The sounds from the other diners, bar and kitchen area echoed, which was distracting. They had a full staff working and everything looked very clean.
The lunch crowd today was mainly of the senior citizen age group, with a few of them being regular customers. I ordered a glass of freshly brewed iced tea for $l.85, a cup of homemade chicken dumpling soup for $2.99, and the special of the day broasted perch for $10.50. My tea was on the weak side and my soup had a good flavor but was very salty, the carrots were previously frozen, the dumplings had a nice texture to them, and the chicken was fresh. For my perch I had a choice of potato so I chose French fries and included with the meal is a side of coleslaw with rye bread. The perch was crispy and browned but the breading lacked flavor, the consistency of the tartar sauce was very thin and watery with only dill pickle relish added to it. My French fries were on the limp side and the creamy coleslaw was bland; the marble rye bread was store bought, but it came buttered and tasted fresh. My server throughout the meal was friendly and efficient and the manager stopped by to ask if everything was okay.
