By Patricia Summerfield October 29, 2009 I went to dine at the Holiday Inn Hotel's restaurant, the River Room, which is located in downtown East Green Bay. The restaurant has a nautical theme with beautiful stained glass designs of a ship's wheel on the ceiling in the lounge area, and a stained glass picture of an old schooner ship in the dining area. Also in the dining area is a wall of glass picture windows that overlooks a nicely manicured lawn and the Fox River. The bar lounge and dining room are open and spacious. The two rooms are tiered with the bar area being higher with shallow carpeted stairs that lead down into the dining area, which is nicely lit with track lighting. The tables are set with white linens and frosted candle votives that give off a cozy warm atmosphere. There are cloth tapestries with pictures of different styles of lighthouses that are tastefully hung from part of the ceiling in the dining room and the carpeting displays a design of small ships wheels. I appreciated the fact that the room had good acoustics for even though it was a busy night the sounds were muted and did not echo.
I ordered the Potato Crusted Cod for $14.00 which comes with a loaf of bread, vegetable du jour, and the salad bar. The salad bar was very clean with an array of selections; they also offered two different choices of lettuce, Romaine or iceberg, the lettuce was very fresh and crisp. My loaf of bread was served whole and warm, but tasted on the bland side except for the seasoning sprinkled lightly on top. My entree consisted of a large piece of cod with seasoned mash potatoes and a thin layer of chive cream which is put on top of the fish and baked. The vegetable du jour was green beans with baby carrots. The fish was thick and done just right, the potatoes' texture and flavor tasted like instant or frozen, and the vegetables also tasted pre-frozen and not fresh. My service throughout the meal was adequate, the server did not attempt to make any conversation just the usual per functionary dining questions. The River Room has a full bar with modest menu prices and a pretty view.
