Latest Band Review - Ian Gould at St. Brendan's Inn in Green Bay, Wisconsin |
By TJ
Posted November 17th, 2008
Live Performance: November 14th, 2008
Tucked away in the corner of St. Brendan’s pub is where I found Ian Gould, a folk singer from Belfast, Ireland. Ian sings and plays acoustic folk with the harmonica. I don’t think it is entirely fair to pigeon hole his music as just another Irish act, in fact, a majority of his set is based on classic American folk tunes from Van Morison to the Beatles. Ian even takes requests for songs with a donation into his stage tin. As I sat there enjoying the restaurant’s delicious shepherd’s pie, curry fries, and the best Guinness on tap I have ever had, Ian played one traditional Irish tune for about every two American classics. What I find most notable about Ian, is his charm and his technical abilities as a guitar player. Not only is he a very skilled folk style finger picker, Ian is also very technical and it carries through to his harmonica and vocal styles. Ian also showed a more personal side when he played some of his own compositions, which were more folk rock and rhythmic. He is without a doubt very capable of writing and producing excellent originals. Ian is laid back, charming, and fun - cheering people up, one pint at a time. So if you come to one of the finest Irish Pub/Restaurants/Inns in Wisconsin, St Brendan’s of Green Bay, to see Ian Gould play, you will see that not only is he very Irish, he is also a very great folk musician as well. Ian shares and involves his audience in some of the traditional Irish drinking songs, and before you know it, you’re laughing, singing along, and putting away the pints. Ian Gould is a great show and plays regularly in Wisconsin and at St. Brendan’s Inn.

River St Pier is a small bar and restaurant set back off of Velp Ave. and is situated on the banks of Duck Creek. The interior is pleasantly decorated with a nautical theme. There are also large picture windows surrounding the restaurant with a pretty view of various trees and a huge weeping willow on the banks of the wide creek. As you walk in there is a long bar and tables to the side of the room and two TVs hung high above the bar in each corner. The restaurant is bright and cheery due to the large windows and noticeably well kept and very clean. They feature a nice menu with very low prices. The specialty here is that everything is made from scratch right on the premises, from their soups to their fantastic homemade potato chips and onion rings.... Latest Band Review - No Name Band at Swobey's Hideout in Green Bay, Wisconsin |
By Sarah
November 13th, 2008 |
| Live Performance: November 9th, 2008
Who are Chris Dame, Heath Hermans, Pat Hibbard, and Dennis Panneck and what’s the name of their band? No seriously, what’s the name of their band. Known only as the “No Name Band”, for now, these four guys were rocking it hard at Swobey’s Hideout on a Sunday night. And it was packed! What may have started out as a way for these talented musicians to blow off some steam, really let loose and jam unscripted has quickly turned into a band that’s drawing lots of attention. The premise: each guy, who by the way in addition have their own serious full-time gigs, chooses four songs that they have always wanted to play but for whatever reason never have. This meant the gamut from U2, Judas Priest, Foo Fighters, Cheap Trick, Beatles and even that obscure song from Valley Girl, but I can’t tell you the name because if you guess the title and band when you’re there you win a shot. Which brings me back to the band’s “temporary” name, “No Name Band”, they want you to name their band. When you come down to listen grab a slip of paper and write down your idea(s) for a name, whatever that may be. The person whose band name is selected will win a ¼ barrel of beer. An unbelievably raw, power-packed, rockin band AND a chance to win beer does it get any better, seriously! Check out GBNightLife.com's event calendar for upcoming event dates. |

For Visitors and Tourists in the Green Bay Area |
Green Bay is best known for their professional football team, “The Green Bay Packers.” The Packer Hall of Fame and the recently remodeled football stadium with its attached atrium are both great tourist attractions. There are many restaurants in Lambeau Field’s atrium such as Green Bay’s famous chili served at Chili Johns restaurants. Many of Green Bay’s restaurants are located near the stadium; for example there is the legendary Brett Favre’s Restaurant and Steakhouse and Green Bay’s original Kroll’s restaurants which are famous for their buttery burgers and yummy chili - a must do if it your first visit to the area.
Other attractions are the Bay Beach Amusement Park, which still has unbelievable bargain prices and classic rides. You can also race around the go cart course and try your hand at mini-golf located right across the street from Bay Beach, or stop by the nearby Wildlife Sanctuary to feed the ducks, and don’t miss out on some of the local restaurants nearby. For Mexican fare there is Maria’s restaurant, which has great authentic food. The city also has many beautiful parks and a beautiful botanical garden which is continuously growing. Even though Green Bay is not a huge metropolitan city, it does offer a large variety of unique entrepreneur restaurants throughout the city, besides the usual restaurant food chains.
De Pere is a charming little city on the eastern border of Green Bay. It is a historic city located on the Fox River with many quaint restaurants. Also situated on the river is St. Norbert, a private college with a beautiful campus. St. Norbert has their own theatre and the school’s production companies put on many great plays and musicals throughout the year. The city has many graceful old homes, clothing boutiques, and a one hundred year old family owned chocolate store which is a local staple.
Another option for theater, concerts, or shows with big names as well as local production companies is the gorgeous Weidner Center located on the University of Green Bay’s campus near the Bay, the Resch Center near Lambeau Field, and the beautifully refurbished Meyer Theater in downtown Green Bay which is conveniently located in the middle of Green Bay’s night life and some of Green Bay’s finest restaurants. Visit Packer Country for more visitor information. |
